Jay-Z and
Beyoncé released the music video for “Apeshit,” a viral, visual magnum opus of
the power couple dancing through the Louvre Museum that now has over 148
million views on Youtube.
The Paris
landmark had 10.2 million visitors in 2018—which is up 25 percent from the year
before. It also breaks their previous record, of 9.7 million visitors in 2012,
by half a million.
“No other
museum in the world has ever equaled this figure," the museum reported in
a statement, before giving a nod to the Carters.
The French
museum certainly capitalized on the pop culture exposure: in July, they
launched a visitor trail called “JAY-Z and Beyoncé at the Louvre,” which
highlights all the artwork featured in the video. (Some examples? The Winged
Victory of Samothrace, Théodore Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa, and
Marie-Guillemine Benoist’s Portrait of a Black Woman.)
Then
there’s the recovery of French tourism in general, which dropped by 1.5 million
in 2016 as safety concerns rose after terrorist attacks. Now, two years later,
it’s bounced back, and France continues to claim its crown as the most visited
country in the world.
